Sounds to me like you might have hit the problem Frank.
When the voltage draw across the battery terminals and into the bikes electrical system is called on for a heavy drain - such as required when starting - if there is oxidation on the battery cable, the resistance can sore to infinite and totally prevent any power from flowing out from the battery and into the electrical system. The flow of current generates heat and the heating causes the resistance to fluctuate. Let the battery and cable cool and mysteriously the electric system will appear to be okay.
Make sure that the metal on the cable ends and on the battery posts is bright - file or scrape them to get rid of the oxidation - be liberal with you use of grease or battery termal post conditioner - this could be a simple solution to the problem of the mysterious appearance and disappearance of the electrical circuits on this particular bike.
